I’m still learning how to write haiku. I’ve been learning for many years. When I do write haiku, I often wonder if it’s truly any good or not. This is because I grew up English speaking, in America. I of course was taught that haiku is 5-7-5 syllables. But, real haiku isn’t about counting syllables. Here are a couple of resources that explain what a real haiku is.

Although I have consumed these resources and more, I still second-guess myself.

But, I feel like you can write haiku however you want. If you want to go with the 5-7-5 format, fine. We can call that, English Haiku. If you want to write haiku that has nothing to do with nature, I suppose that’s fine too. But, challenge yourself to try and learn the traditional way as well. See what you come up with!
